About the Firm

Charles was a name, not a surname.

Charles Tax Group was founded by my brother — known to his clients simply as "Charles." Today I carry forward what he built, with the tools and rigor of a modern practice. This is the story of why.

The Legacy

My brother's practice.

My brother Judex started this business in 1995. One client at a time, he grew it with his accuracy, his honesty, and his fairness — with care that went beyond the return.

He never liked his first name. Everyone simply called him "Charles." The people in Northern Jersey knew that's who you called when you needed someone to look at a notice from the IRS, walk you through what you owed, or figure out what the math actually meant for your family. It was personal. It was honest. It was accurate.

In 2015, he pulled me into the business because it had grown too big for him to handle alone — and because he knew I had skills that complemented his perfectly. By that point, I'd owned and managed a restaurant, three chiropractic clinics, and a radio station. I'd worked in real estate, finance, and sales. He saw all of that as an asset, and he was right.

We worked together for six years, until he was taken from us by Covid-19.

When he died, the practice didn't. The work he did still mattered. The relationships still existed. And the standard he set — clear pricing, careful preparation, a real person at the other end of the phone — was something I wasn't willing to let disappear.

Charles Tax Group is the continuation of that practice. The name is his. The standard is his. What's different is the way the work is done — the tools, the speed, the reach. Covid-19 also made the practice virtual. Clients don't have to sit in an office anymore to have their taxes done right. Today I serve individuals and small businesses in multiple states without asking them to come to me, and I serve tax professionals across the country who need ledger work done quickly and accurately so they can focus on the parts only they can do.

But the underlying promise hasn't changed. Accuracy is the through-line, and the person preparing your work is the person you can reach.

The Promise

Why "a legacy of accuracy."

Tax work — the kind worth paying for — comes down to one thing: getting it right. Not approximately right. Not mostly right. Right enough that a year later, when a notice arrives or a question gets asked or an audit gets opened, the work holds up. That's what my brother believed. That's what I practice.

For an individual filing a return, accuracy means knowing the deductions you're entitled to and the ones you're not — and being able to explain the difference. For a CPA outsourcing ledger preparation, accuracy means a reconciled file with categorizations that match the return, flagged for the questions you'd ask if you had the time to go through it yourself.

Different deliverables. Same standard. A legacy of accuracy isn't a tagline I picked from a list. It's the promise the firm was built on, and the one I'm carrying forward.

Background

About Joel.

Before tax, I spent twenty years as a serial entrepreneur. I've also been a U.S. Army combat medic, a college professor, a high school teacher, and a soccer coach. I still work as a mortgage broker and a licensed life and health insurance agent — because I love serving people. Across all of it, I've worked in real estate, mortgage, and insurance — fields where the cost of being wrong on the math falls directly on the family at the kitchen table. That experience shapes how I do tax work.

My favorite quote is attributed to Zig Ziglar:

"You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want."

I have been blessed to be the father of six boys and one girl, and a grandfather to an extreme.

I'm a US-based tax professional operating out of Orlando, Florida, licensed and authorized by the IRS as an e-file Provider under EFIN 592274. I prepare individual returns (Form 1040, including self-employed Schedule C) and small business returns. I also act as a capacity partner to CPAs, EAs, and bookkeepers across the country — handling the ledger work, the data prep, and the file cleanup that takes their hours without growing their expertise.

I run a virtual practice. Over the last few seasons I've prepared hundreds of returns for clients across California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Indiana. In a typical year I meet maybe one client in person, and two or so by video — Zoom, Google Meet, or WhatsApp video. The rest comes through text, WhatsApp, or email. Documents in, completed return back within twenty-four hours, filed only after you've reviewed and approved every line.
